First Responder Counseling
First responders—police officers, firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, corrections officers, and dispatchers—face frequent exposure to high-stress, potentially traumatic events. Repeated exposure can lead to burnout, compassion fatigue, moral injury, anxiety, depression, PTSD, sleep disruption, and relationship strain. Yorel Clinic’s First Responder Counseling program is tailored specifically for these professionals.

what we provide
Intake assessment and triage
We begin with a focused assessment covering occupational history, recent incidents, symptom presentation (PTSD, depression, anxiety), substance use, sleep patterns, and support systems. This determines whether immediate stabilization, short-term intervention, or specialized trauma therapy is indicated.
Short-term crisis stabilization
Following critical incidents, we provide rapid stabilization, safety planning, and symptom management strategies. This includes techniques for grounding, sleep hygiene, and short-term pharmacologic liaison when coordination with a prescribing clinician is needed.
Trauma-focused therapies
For responders with ongoing PTSD or intrusive memories, clinicians use evidence-based modalities such as Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), and elements of EMDR where clinically indicated. These approaches reduce avoidance, reframe maladaptive beliefs, and help process distressing memories safely.
Resilience training and skills coaching
We offer coach-style resilience training focusing on emotion regulation, peer support frameworks, recovery rituals, sleep management, and strategies to reduce cumulative stress. Training can be delivered individually or through departmental workshops.
Anger and interpersonal management
Because uncontrolled anger often emerges from occupational stress, we provide targeted anger management to reduce workplace conflict and improve family relationships. Techniques focus on impulse control, assertive communication, and repair strategies.
Peer support networks and family involvement
We help build and strengthen peer support structures, offer family education sessions to help loved ones understand the job-related stress, and provide joint sessions to rebuild trust and communication.
Telehealth and confidentiality
Many first responders prefer telehealth sessions for convenience and privacy. Our telehealth platform is secure and confidential, and we offer flexible scheduling to ensure access outside typical business hours.
Outcomes and measures of success
We emphasize measurable improvements: decreased intrusive symptoms, improved sleep, reduced substance use risk, better mood regulation, and enhanced workplace performance. Using standardized measures, we track symptom reductions and functional gains across the treatment course.
Moral injury and ethical harm work
When events conflict with a responder’s moral code, moral injury may develop. We address moral injury with therapies that focus on meaning-making, value alignment, grief processing, and restorative practices that help restore a sense of integrity.
Common questions
Will my employer find out if I seek counseling?
We prioritize confidentiality. With few legal exceptions (e.g., imminent harm), we will not share your clinical information without consent. If coordination with occupational health is requested or required, we discuss how to handle information sharing ahead of time.
How long until I feel better?
Short-term stabilization techniques can reduce acute distress quickly, often within a few sessions. Trauma processing or deeper moral injury work may take longer—often several weeks to months—depending on symptom severity and goals.
Do you provide group or peer support programs?
Yes. We provide peer support facilitation and can partner with departments to deliver resilience workshops or post-incident debriefing.
